This is an attempt to capture the spirit of Sydney,
the underlying force that makes Sydney one of the most seductive
cities in the world.
The story you are about to read is not an exhaustive description
of Sydney's suburbs, attractions or communities. Rather, it is
the result of a collection of random events, chance encounters
and coincidences that, together, hint at what it means to live
in this city. The book does not have a historic context - no -
it is a snapshot of Sydney, instantaneous, documenting daily realities
of life.
Also, this is a personal story. This book was not commissioned
by a publisher nor was it entirely planned. Rather, it evolved
slowly from a slightly hypothetical idea into a consuming passion.
I wanted to express through panoramic photography what is so intangible
in life, trying to capture those moments that are precious and
often fleeting.
My view is the perspective and focal point of an outsider, to
whom many aspects of the city can seem surprising and intriguing,
sometimes unexpected, exciting and eccentric.
The images created for this book are panoramic, ranging from
50º to 400º, and were taken with a wide-angle lens on
a rotating roundshot body. I believe panoramic photography best
encapsulates the expansiveness of Sydney's harbour and the openness
of its people. It is an unusual type of photography. When people
see a panoramic image for the first time they are usually quite
puzzled. The panoramic perspective is dramatic and places the
viewer directly in the centre of the action.
Let me take you on a journey
through what, I think, are the essential themes of this city:
water & space, style,
play, freedom
& opportunity and finally escapes.
Welcome to Real Sydney!
