| Since
the end of World War II, almost 6 million immigrants have arrived
in Australia, introducing some 150 unoffical languages. The
population has grown substantially from 7 million to the current
19 million. Immigration has always played a critical role in
the development of the country, and about one quarter of its
people are actually born overseas. In the early days, new arrivals
passed through piers like this one, starting in 1788 with 160,000
convicts. |
